Increasing strategic importance of logistics related processes demands higher integration of performance management and supply chain management. Despite the increasing focus on supply chain management and business collaboration, studies in the area of performance management still narrowly look at the single enterprise and its “within-enterprise” processes. The purpose of our article is to put forward a number of lessons we have learned from various case studies which can be used to better enable those responsible for making outsourcing decisions. In doing so, we intend to identify a number of challenges and pitfalls that usually threaten the successful outcome of outsourcing initiatives. Lastly, we will have a look at some of the trends we are observing, presently, in the field.
